Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

a pic from an earlier point in the project... super1(2).jpg a couple of things can be seen by looking at the column on the left. one, I've been trying out different shades of blue to use for the superstructure... and two, styrene plastic has a nasty tendency to warp where other parts are glued to it...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Also...
I recently purchased a cordless Dremel 800 rotary tool. I'll be going back and doing a lot more sanding/polishing in the hard-to-reach corners of the structure. Until now, they had been left a bit rough.

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Once the two conveyors (1/4" square tube styrene) were mocked up in place, I was able to take measurements for all the downspouts (also 1/4" square tube styrene), and get them cut and glued to the conveyors... w_elev_07_20.jpg at this point I also made the railings for the silos, construct...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Back to the top of the structure, to get some conveyors laid out and built- First, I made a template for getting everything centered on the tops of the silos (or at least as centered as I could get them, with the PVC pipe being a bit out of round): w_elev_07_19.jpg w_elev_07_18.jpg Once I had the en...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Shifting attention to another part of the elevator... This is what I refer to as the West Alleyway... it is where incoming loads of grain are unloaded into the west elevator. w_alleyway1.jpg Here's a view from inside the alleyway, with a semi parked inside: w_alleyway2.jpg I made the steel and wood ...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the aeration fans while I was making them (wish I had)... they were also made using the mold technique. Each fan consists of three molded pieces that are superglued together.

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

The project has been on hold for a while as I've been busy with other stuff, but I thought I'd get some pics posted of the progress to date- Here's a picture of the west superstructure with the distributor and screener installed, along with most of the spouts coming off the distributor to the variou...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Great Job, Mike! Regarding above, another Mike (Mike Rose) has been working on what he calls Grainzilla, and has doen many presentations on it at RPM meets and the Craftsman Structure Show... it's a site to see, and similar in construct to what you're doing. He also had so much trouble with railing...

Re: A Scratchbuild Grain Elevator Project

Wonderful thread, I love it. :ymapplause: You picked a challenging topic for your first scratchbuilding project , but your are doing very well til now. Scratchbuilding the superstructure of a grain elevator definetely is challenging. I have a suggestion to make, regarding the excess resin. Why dont...
