Fish Camp, Lonsdale & Wood River

Once the actuating lever/rod is assembled and cut to length a spring is made from the .025 music wire.

Bend the acute angle first and then the two 90 degree angles. I always make the bent legs longer than needed and trim to a finished length as it is assembled.

This is how it will look when installed above and below the roadbed. This photo only shows the assembly for some clarity. The actuating arm must be installed with the points centered between the rails and the slide switch in the center of its' throw. The music wire spring must be soldered from below the bench work. :ymsigh:

First I thought I knew where you were going with this, now I'm not so sure. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

A few more posts and this will be done. I had nine to make so it's easier to mass produce than just get setup for one. And remember, the frog has to be wired and tested 8-|

Thanks for checking in

It's now time to solder the spring into the actuating lever. Center the points. I use some scrap ties and place a weight on the top of the lever, again scrap wood to bring the height to the rails and then place a weight on the lever. An assistant would work =)) if you can recruit one. A bribe of money or a free meal works -- sometimes :D

The slide switch needs to be center. The spring is pushed into the brass actuating lever and the slide switch, solder the spring and the brass. The spring is free to rotate in the switch. A throw bar is needed to go from the slide switch and pass through the layout fascia board. This was the most difficult part to find 8-| Years ago we replaced all out metal hangers with plastic and just recently the plastic was moved out to make way for wood. A local yard sale yielded a dozen -- free ;;) Thye lady had no idea what I was talking about when I started to explain =)) A small wood bead from the craft makes a neat end.

Here is a sample made for the camera only. The plywood base is attached to the two inch thick foam and passes through it and the homasote roadbed, not shown in this pic. Hope this helps.

Hi Cuz

OK I get it now - you need to solder the spring to the brass tube in order to get the throw on top to move the same way, right? Or is it a friction fit? I get how the spring works with the switch but if there's no solid connection between the brass tube and the spring it looks like it's going to have a hard time holdign the points in place.

Correct. correct, correct. The spring is soldered to the base of brass tube.I did not do that in this picture because I need to install it under the layout and once soldered it will not pass through the aluminium tube =))

Returning from vacation there are two weeks before setting off on our next trip. Getting back in action is slow but between building turnout controls and laying track I started on the warf scene between the 90 degree corner that connects Jordan Pond with Lonsdale. This will be a connection with Narragansett Bay, a direct link to the Atlantic Ocean. This warf will be used as a link to barges, sailing boats and fishing craft and should provide a profitable source of revenue for this short narrow gauge railroad.

There will be a small coastal village to the right in this photo. Have not decided what will be here exactly but small buildings that cater to fishing and industrial traffic.

There will also be a small lift bridge, not working, but could be in the future. I am leaning towards a stiff leg crane to transfer freight from barges and ships located some where on the warf. Of course many buildings built over the bay waters :D :D

David,

I love the whole thing-but, especially, the stained woodwork. Really cool!

Thanks John, something I tried after reading the online hobby magazine. I used balsa wood and craft paint from Micheals, cheap stuff - .59 each - not the $1.29 stuff =)) =)) if you are in the area stop in. Thanks for checking in on the thread :D
