Work Bench Light - Ott-lite

Postby gfoyle01 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:56 pm

Just venting a little. Less than a year ago I purchased an Ott-lite light (Model#T8337R) for my work area. I thought it was a nice light, not cheap but has nice natural light and included a magifying feature. It worked well until the light bulb went. This Ott-lite uses a proprietary bulb design which has been discontinued. I guess I should have known better when I bought the lamp but I am very disappointed in Ott-lite product support. Response from Ott-lite was interesting and I think indicates a little disregard for their customers. They suggested I search the internet for old stock of bulbs or that I have the lamp re-wired to accept conventional bulbs. I think a simple "sorry - deal with it" would be a better response. In any case, it is a lesson learned and I can't imagine why I would ever consider Ott-lite again.

Interesting. I have an Ott-lite I bought years ago that I have never used. Of course at the time the selling point was the "Natural" color temperature of the light, at a time when it was pretty hard to get anything other than "Standard" light bulbs. Wish I hadn't been taken in by the hype, should have realized it was a waste of money.

I've seen bulbs for those at Home depot. But I confess I haven't looked lately. Sometime thins like that hang aound for awhile out here in the flyover states. I'll check, BILL

I purchased from Amazon and they are still listed. I'd buy more than one if it is the right one

I won't buy an Ott light because of old complaints like this.
I use the Blue Max and have been able to get any component for it during the last 7 years.

...my wife (being a quilter) used to swear by the Ott-lites...until she had to replace bulbs....we have found a few bulbs on ebay and amazon from time to time, but are gradually trying to get rid of the Ott-lites.....it's amazing how something so well designed apparently is so difficult to deal with.....

Yeah, I checked at HD yesterday. They have a plethora of tubes SIMILAR to the Ott Lites but the base is just a little different. Sorry. BILL

My magnifier light uses a standard bulb which used to be incandescent but is now CFL, with CFL it is what ever wattage will fit as regular was limited to 60 watt which got quite warm. The problem with the bulbs is why I never bought one of those Ott lites.

I have an Ott Lite I seldom use. How can I tell if my lamp's bulb is the one in question here?

I bought the lamp 50% at Michael's a few years back.

Jaime
OTT-LITE 13 Watt Plug In Swirl Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb
The Ott-lite product number is T135Z5 (or T133SX and T1397X).
Printing on base of bulb may differ (mine has none.) I think the base style is Type PL.
There are similar bulbs at home depot but they are too long to fit in the bulb compartment.
