Adventures with paper

Postby MASSIVERALPH » Thu Oct 27, 2011 6:44 pm

There is a plus with having many projects ongoing. While something is drying, something needs attention. I need six scratchbuilt structures to qualify for the structure AP certificate. I decided to try a paper, well mostly paper, tank. My buddy Hueber had given me a set of plans from MR blown up to HO scale from the N scale in the magazine. My buddy Rick Bickmore who is a genius with paper modeling built this tank. I'm not creative enough to figure things out on how to do things, but I can copy pretty good. I'm going to try to copy Ricks success with this thread.

I grabbed some of that 1/16 mat board that Candy urged me to buy. I cut two circles out after tracing a line with a compass.

I then added some supports putting in some extra fins to act as a support for the outer wrapper.

They were glued with Aileens tacky glue.

The outer wrapper is tacked to one of the fins. This needs to dry overnight.

Ralph,
this looks like it might fit my needs in some empty spaces I have. I will follow with interest.

Dave, I hope it does. One thing I forgot to mention, I did give this a coat of clear sealer before I started to attach the side wrapper. I was warned to do that, lest moisture cause warping. I have some background buildings I am going to use matboard for the wall sides, and DPM wall for the rear. I printed of some brick texture to cover the mat board. A lot cheaper than .060 styrene. Hueber liked the idea.

Reb, those fast setting glues are great if your a good modeler. For the average guy like me, there is an advantage to slowing the big lizard down.

I am playing with some background row homes next to the tracks. I bought some DPM modular units. I need to put a door in them. I made some sides from mat board. just playing and futzing right now.

Why put doors on them? Butt them right up against the track with a bit of fence. That's actually pretty common in the northeast, to see tenements that have no back yards against railroad right-of-ways. Take a look at the flats I'm using behind the dock here, there's just enough room for the fire escapes:

I need to add the fence to cover that white spot you can between the Heinz reefer and stock car.
