Camel Cigarettes - The "Smoking" Billboard

Postby johnknapp » Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:19 am

No matter what you think of smokers and smoking, this would be a cool thing to add to a city scene in a layout (...at least in my opinion!!). This picture is from the late 1940's and the Camel Cigarette billboard has real smoke puffing out of the mouth of the person smoking. I'm sure there would be a "healthy" way to do that in a layout scene........

Seems like you could easily mount a smoke generator. A bellows of some sort would help propel the smoke outward. Great sign. Reminds me of the Leave it to Beaver when the Beave ends up climbing into the "steaming" cup of coffee on the billboard and gets stuck.

The problem with any smoke generator (except steam or dry ice) is the potential for leaving residues on the track.

That Leave it to Beaver episode is my favorite. That Whitey was a bigger smart ass than Eddie Haskell!

The other problem is that smoke, like water, doesn't scale well. Remember those old sea battle movies when they cut to the models in the tank? You'd see those six-inch diameter water drops splashing all over the place.

On the other hand - there's a bunch of neat signage in that shot.

The artiste in me had to crop it just for the fun of it:

Speaking of animation, notice the neon letters spelling "Costlier Tobaccos" were animated to change and spell something else. The neon tubes are stacked with other letters in that area. Looks like at least three different layers for three phrases. The second one is probably "First in the Service"... anyone figure the third phrase? I think the smoke puff sign would be sort of cute on a diorama.

Ok, it's not a laundrymat, but the line popped into my head seeing "Chin's Dine and Dance.

That's pretty neat about the other signs in the Costlier sign. Didn't even notice it.

The last cropped photo is actually pretty neat with the bus flying by and the two people standing there motionless.

The sign changed periodically during the war. I guess the smoke generator and blower mechanism resided in a dark office. Those massive billboards covered up a number of windows.
