ON30 Boxcar build / Sandy River Car Shops / Elk River Line

Postby roughneck » Fri May 14, 2010 2:53 pm

This is not currently my scale but I'm going to try building this Sandy River Car Shops kit of the WW&F car #503 in O scale. It has been mentioned on the forum a few times to try something outside of your scale to mix things up a bit. I've been following Bob Haydens articles in the Gazette on bashing Maine style equipment and this got the juices flowing. The kit comes from Swansea, MA and has been sitting in my "to do" cabinet for about a year and I will finally give it a try. It will be slow as I am trying to complete the fishing boat in HO scale and just recently Bait & Switch Tackle.

The kit is a box of flat wood, sticks and plastic pieces from either Tichy or Grandt. There are no trucks, couplers or decals included. The instructions are one sheet of 8 1/2" X 11" paper printed on two sides with written directions and an 8 1/2" X 14" piece printed one side for a scale blueprint. I will approach this build as I would a structure and prime all the wood pieces with Walmart rattle can gray primer. I let the primer dry until it does not smell, go over all wood with a scrubby pad to remove any raised wood grain. I then drag a razor saw down each piece of wood to give some grain and then deburr again with the scrubby pad. I light application of A&I wash and then assemble the sticks over the supplied blueprint.

Thanks for the interest :D I will be trying to get some progress this week. Pictures will be forth coming if I don't discard them by mistake on Picasa. It is taking me sometime to learn all the details of this free program.

Well I changed plans. :-?? Didn't like the light color of the sticks for the underbody of this car, way too light, so before beginning construction I painted the wood "wood" color from Model Masters. When dry scraping with a razor saw and using an A&I wash produced a darker color for the underbody detail. NExt was placing some wax paper over the full size plans. Cut the sticks to size and check all dimensions before glueing up over the plans. I use Elmers carpenters brown glue for this step. The floor supplied was a blank piece of wood, I scribed wood floor boards and applied a heavy coat of A&I wash. Holes were drilled for the queen posts and the ends of the truss rods per the instructions. Nylon fishing line is supplied for the rods. All under frame details were painted black and then lightly weathered with rust paint from Floquil. Two blocks of wood are supplied to help support the sub roof and sides. Thats it for now

Last picture for the day on this thread. Showing the inside of the car with fishing line epoxied in place. I've used this method before with goo results. After the queen posts are in place and dried secure, attach one end of the nylon fishing line with epoxy and let dry, about 12 hours. Thread on the turnbuckles and position line at the base of the queenpost and epoxy to opposite end of car floor. When dry carefully lift and place in proper position on queenpost. I have some HOn30 cars that this has been used and the results are good. If you are wondering why there are two sets of interior support blocks in the pictures I always make extra parts when building a kit using the kit parts as samples. If I like the final results and can make a second or third car from the parts I copied. My son calls me cheap, I say frugal /:)

Dave,

I agree with your change of color. This looks more like the bottom of an old wooden boxcar! I really like the color also. Great job on the rustiness of the of the queenposts and truss rods. Thanks for the update! Build on!!!! :D :D

Thanks Tom, more dusting of chaulks will help blend everything together as the build progresses. The two foot equipment was poorly maintained as the roads went into receivership in there last years. :( but I like the look of older well used stuff. :D

I applied the finish color for the sides, ends and doors using model masters burnt sienna.

Full strength and dip the brush in rubbing alcohol to make a wash down the side of the panels. This allows the base of primer to show through. After the wash is dry I apply strips of masking tape to isolate individual boards and use a 3M spot sanding pen to rough up a few boards for a futher derilect condition.
