Hi All:

Here is a structure I started some time ago and never finished. It is a structure from the F&SM. It was called Izzy's fish. I changed the name to Pfefferkorn's Pfish market. Plans and signs were done by my friend Jim Mooney. Siding is North Eastern Weathered clap board, windows are Tichy, shutters are scratch built, fire escapes are by tichy, shingles are Bar Mills (they are really excellent), I made the lobster sign, Let me know how you like it. Here are the final photos.

Here's my HOn30 enginehouse, part 1: Design to wall assembly.
First I drew a plan to scale. You need a program capable of drawing primitive shapes (lines, boxes, circles, etc) to -specific sizes-. This actually can be done in PowerPoint; draw a box then click on the object properties to set the size. I have a decimal ruler and of course decimal read-out dial and digital calipers. When I'm happy with the drawing, I draw it -flipped- and glue it to the back of the wood to cut the wood.

I used double-stick Scotch tape to 'glue' the templates to the back of the wood. Note the blue tape on the front of the wood, this prevents splitting as I cut through the templates and wood. It's important to make sure both the blue masking tape and the templates are firmly affixed where the wood is thin, to keep the wood from breaking.

I pre-painted and weathered the clapboard siding (actually did this before cutting) and then stain/painted the stripwood. Here I'm fixing the stripwood to the siding. Note you can't have too many clamps

Part 2: Building the box.

To assemble the structure, I first assemble a wall and an end to form an L, and do likewise with the other wall and end. Then after these are dry, I glue the 2 "Ls" together to get the box. You can see the stripwood bracing on the inside. Then I cut and added a ridgepole.

Here are the doors. Originally I was going to make them hinged, but then I decided to make them rolling doors along an upper track. Anyway, note how the trim on the left side of the door is cut away to get a tighter fit against the wall of the structure. This isn't 100% prototypical, but will look better from the viewing angle for the structure as a whole.

I did the foundation by building a 3-sided box with mitred corners from stripwood, then sanding and painting the wood to seal. Then I painted stonework onto that foundation. Here's a test-fit to make sure the loco fits!

Finally, I built the cupola (that was actually the hardest part). Here's the completed structure on-location (ignore that 12penny nail stuck in the styrofoam, this is trimmed from a larger photo.

Wow Karl! That's a sweet model!
So did you use that larger 6" northeastern siding for the sides of this structure? It looks like those sides are larger than a normal section of siding. Also, would you mind if I built a version of this structure for my railroad?

That build is terrible, all out of proportion and the colors are horrible, it would look much better on my railroad due to my inferior standards! Nice job by the way, most of your builds have a lot more detail than mine, got to learn to add more little touches.

Both structures are excellent.

In October 1976, RMC magazine had an article on building a Watchman's Shanty by Bill Schaumburg and Wayne Wesolowski.

I thought it was such a neat structure I decided to build one or two or three or four. Yes, I built four, kept two and gave two as gifts to friends. Keep in mind at the time there was no laser cutting, no Tichy windows, no kits of this type except maybe Tyco or Revell!

I decided I had to give it a try. It is all stripwood and I guess you could say it was scratch built even though the plans were in HO Scale in the RMC. It involved all the wood from scale 2x2's to 12x12's. The photos below are of two of the structures I built in October 1979, some 32 years ago. I never finished them as far as a few details and interior details. The shanty has 156 pieces of stripwood and the stair complex contains 154 pieces of stripwood.
