Finally worked on Yellow Bonnets

Finally worked on Yellow Bonnets

Postby fifer » Wed Apr 27, 2011 11:30 am

I finally got up this morning and got decoders installed in the AB set of IM Yellow Bonnets I have had for a while . While I was at it I made a brawbar and close coupled them. I know they were not braw bared but I do not plan on splitting them. They seem to track fine on the layout so may put diaphragms in.

Nice work. Was this an experimental color scheme on the Santa Fe, or did the shop run out of blue paint? :D

Mike:

Those are a couple of great looking engines.

I have loved the Santa Fe war bonnet design since the American Flyer set I had when I was a kid.

Very nice job!

Jeff

I am not a history guy so maybe someone else has the answer but I seem to remember them being experimental.

I gotta say, that paint scheme (red or yellow warbonnet) has to have been one of the most recognizable corporate logos in history, and warmly, nostalgically regarded by millions of men and boys all across the country. More so than the Square GM logo, the Coca-Cola swoosh or any other you can name. BNSF was the biggest bunch of idiots on the face of the earth to drop in in favor of whatever scheme they have now. You can't even put a price on that kind of recognition. It's part of American Memory. What a bunch of dopes.

Jeff:

I think I remember reading somewhere that the original intent by the ATSF for the color on the war bonnets was red for the passenger trains and the yellow for the freight trains.

Whether this translated to reality, I have no idea.

Mike,

Very nice indeed! My very first train set was American Flyer in the Red War Bonnets on PA units.

BTW, Santa Fe used blue war bonnets on the frieght units but I seemed to remember a few yellow ones as well, not sure!

Who cares, they are still beauts!
